• Pre operation physical therapy is getting more common since most studies show that there are multiple number of benefits patient gets if they commit to a physical therapy program before their surgery. It also helps to speed up the recovery period after the surgery. According to the study that was published in British Journal of Sports Medicine, patients who had physical therapy before surgery had much better outcomes after surgery than patients who only had physical therapy after surgery. This research involved 84 patients between 2007 and 2011 who received pre and post operative physical therapy

The goals of a pre-operative physical therapy program:

-Work on movement patterns prior to your surgery

-Get familiar with the exercises that will be part of post-operative physical therapy program

Post-operative physical therapy treatments include:

-Strategies for pain reduction including modalities such as ice, heat, and electrical stimulation
-Exercises to improve range of motion and increase flexibility
-Rebuilding muscles with strengthening exercises
-Posture, balance, and coordination training
-Manual therapy techniques
